Assessment

Invision Psychology can assist with the evaluation of various psychological conditions, encompassing mental health issues, developmental disorders such as ADHD and Autism, and learning difficulties.

Our assessment procedures utilise evidence-based psychometric tools complemented by clinical expertise, resulting in comprehensive findings and recommendations presented in the form of a report that will  guide further clinical decision-making.

What are psychological assessments and how can they help?

Assessments can be invaluable for gaining insights into the root causes of psychological difficulties, formulating effective treatment plans, and or accessing supplementary services.

In most cases, a multidisciplinary approach is essential, typically involving an initial consultation with your general practitioner (GP) and a review of the final report by a treating physician, such as a psychiatrist or paediatrician. This collaboration ensures a clinical diagnosis and recommendations for treatment that may include options complementary to psychology intervention such as pharmacotherapy.

The assessment Process

Step 1. A consultation with your GP is recommended to review your initial concerns and you may be eligible for a Medicare mental health care plan for assessment and treatment of mental health conditions.

Step 2. Contact our office to start the intake process. This will involve completing our intake form and reviewing our information sheet and consent form.

Step 3. Your initial appointment will be a 1.5 hour interview to review your symptoms and history related to your presenting problem.

Step 4. During or following your initial consultation, assessment questionnaires will be administered or emailed to you to complete at home.

Step 5. Assessments of autism, cognitive functioning and learning difficulties involve an additional in-person session to complete performance tests.

Step 6. All of the assessment information will be reviewed and compiled into a comprehensive report that will describe the background and history related to the condition, assessment results and recommendations for ongoing support.

Step 7. Your psychologist will schedule a feedback session to review the results, discuss the implications and provide recommendations for ongoing support.

Step 8. You may wish to have your results reviewed by a treating physician to obtain a formal diagnosis and receive information regarding other forms of treatment such as medication.

Types of Assessment Available

Mental Health
We offer comprehensive assessments for mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and sleep disorders. Our evaluations help identify symptoms and their severity, providing a clear understanding to guide treatment options, track treatment outcomes and improve mental well-being.

Cognitive Functioning
Cognitive impairments can be present from birth or develop later in life. Through cognitive testing (commonly referred to as IQ testing), we assess performance across various domains, identifying intellectual disabilities, giftedness, or specific learning disorders. By comparing results to a normed population, we can provide insight into an individual’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses relative to the general population.

Learning Difficulties
A specific learning disorder, such as dyslexia (reading impairment), dysgraphia (writing impairment), or dyscalculia (math impairment), can impact a child’s educational progress. Our assessment process includes cognitive testing and academic achievement evaluations. A significant discrepancy  or patterns of strengths and weaknesses between these scores can help diagnose learning disorders.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism is a complex developmental condition that may be diagnosed in childhood or later in life. Due to its wide spectrum of symptoms, a thorough assessment is essential. Our evaluations incorporate multiple sources of input, including clinical interviews, reports from parents, teachers, or the individual, direct observations, performance tests, and collaboration with other professionals such as occupational therapists or a pediatrician.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a developmental condition often recognised in childhood, though it may remain undiagnosed until later in life. ADHD can present as predominantly inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive, or a combination of both. Our assessments involve gathering information from various contexts such as home, school, or work through clinical interviews, questionnaires, behavioural observations, and consultations with medical professionals such as a paediatrician or psychiatrists.

Functional Capacity
Functional capacity or adaptive behaviour can be assessed across a range of skill areas essential for daily living, such as abilities related to communication, social interaction, self-care, self-management and mobility.  This type of assessment may be necessary to describe the impact of disability on a persons functioning and can be helpful to identify areas of support needs in such cases.
